Adopt a strategy of containment. One of the most challenging things to deal with is toddler twin cyclones trailing you as you attempt to clean and organize your home. You make the beds in one room, they pull clothes out of the closet in another; you go to pick up the clothes and put them back in the closet, they spill water on the beds you just made.

You can curtail this mess-making merriment by containing your twins in a playpen or distracting them with a favorite game or toy when you are trying to clean up. Limit their toys to one or two rooms and designated storage bins or boxes. Attempt to limit food to a few rooms, such as the kitchen and family room. Same goes for where you decide to store things that they like to pull out: if you can deal with cleaning up Tupperware over and over again, leave that in the low cabinets. If you can’t keep them away from the unopened rolls of toilet paper, move them up higher (see our “Safety Matters” chapter for more twin-proofing tips). And definitely invest in some childproofing equipment. Don’t worry, the plastic locks on your cabinets are temporary (twins seem to be most curious between the ages of twelve months and three years).
